Augusta Heritage Festival, July 24-29, Davis and Elkins College, Elkins, WV.
This will be my 4th time to teach this class at the Augusta Festival. A
week-long class like this allows for concepts like rhythms, phrasing, and ornamentation to be taught separately from the tunes and then applied as the tunes are worked on and developed. This workshop
will be a part of Irish Week thus offering a unique opportunity to be exposed to a lot of Irish traditional music and dance beyond the class itself. You can even take mini-classes in Irish dancing in the evening. This is where I first got exposed to real Irish music when I took Karen Ashbrook's workshop in 1987; I got hooked on the Festival and went back many more times taking workshops on other instruments, learning ideas to apply to the dulcimer.

The focus of this 1-week class was learning Irish traditional tunes and to play them in an Irish traditional style. The repertoire focused on Irish traditional tunes that could be used for easy-listening venues such as weddings, garden parties, etc. In addition, the class worked on ornamentation, and simple exercises to help develop the unique feel of the Irish style.
Among other tunes, the class learned "Give Me Your Hand" as a possible wedding march and "The Boys of Ballisodare", a slip jig that is fun to use as a wedding recessional.

The workshop at Heartland was a comprehensive workshop on playing Irish traditional music on the hammered dulcimer. Both repertoire and technique were covered. Sessions on technique focused on those elements that are essential to making the tunes sound "Irish": ornamentation, rhythms, and phrasing. Some time was also spent on variations.
1998 FESTIVALS AND WORKSHOPS
Winterfest Acoustic Music Festival
I taught two workshops at this Festival:1. An "intermediate" workshop on the Irish reel "Belles of Tipperary". This reel is very rhythmical and has easy-to-learn patterns. An important part of this workshop was identifying the phrasing and which notes of the tune are actually pick-up notes for the next phrase. Also, some variations were provided on a couple of the phrases.
2. An int/adv workshop on Tunes from the Movie The Secret of Roan Inish. The tunes were
Obviously there wasn't be time to learn all four tunes in one hour, but unique or important aspects of the tunes were covered so they could be finished at home.
Summer Hammered Dulcimer Workshop

This workshop was a four-day Intermediate-level workshop on Playing Irish Traditional Music on the Hammered Dulcimer. Both repertoire and technique were covered. Technique focused on ornamentation and rhythm & phrasing, e.g., making jigs sound like jigs, hornpipes sound like hornpipes, etc. We also spent some time developing listening skills by practicing "Playing Without Looking".The following tunes were taught:
